The Samskaara Academy Advantage

A World of Adventure

Every day at Samskaara is an adventure filled with excitement and learning. Our classrooms and campus are designed to stimulate young minds, creating an environment where work becomes a fulfilling experience. Through hands-on activities, students satisfy their natural curiosity, unraveling the mysteries of the world around them.

Learning through Play

We understand that play is an essential part of a child's development. At Samskaara Academy, we have dedicated school parks and sand-pits where children can engage in imaginative play, fostering creativity and social skills. By integrating play into our curriculum, we ensure that learning is enjoyable and rewarding.

Achieve Academic Excellence

Our commitment to providing quality education extends to academic excellence. From Early Montessori to Grade Five, our students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for future success. With our carefully crafted curriculum and experienced faculty, we empower students to reach their full potential.

Board exams are taken at Grade 10, but the preparation towards this milestone begins from the very first year of High School and continues through each year. All batches of seniors have done extremely well at the ICSE exams, some even scoring a 100% in two subjects. The typical Samskaarian is encouraged to ask questions and children are appreciated for having doubts. Curiosity sparks learning, eliminates fear and moulds a braver, brighter individual.

Our sections are grouped into:

CASA

Early Montessori, Junior Montessori and Senior Montessori - 2.5 to 6 year olds

Periodically, we invite parents of our students to silently watch their children grow in intelligence and ability. You get a chance to watch them work on activities that help in developing their fine and gross motor movements, concentration, independence, sequencing, self-esteem, grace, and courtesy. It happens through activities like grating a carrot, washing hands, washing utensils, cutting, folding napkins along the marked line.

You may watch the child fine-tune its senses by working with Sensorial activities like touching, feeling, and understanding various materials in the environment and perceive qualities like: big, small, oval, rectangle, circle, pyramid, sour, loud, smooth, and rough. The children go into abstraction by repeating each sensorial material through variations and exercises and each quality is given a name by the facilitator.

A Language session is given with vocabulary, stories, rhymes and conversation. The letters of English are offered phonetically, the child learns to listen to sounds in a word and works with the moveable alphabet which takes him/her to writing words, phrases and sentences.

Reading happens after writing. In Samskaara we also offer Tamil and Hindi in a Montessori manner where they work with materials. They learn to read and write in Hindi and Tamil by the age of six.

If you happen to observe a child learning Mathematics, you will find him/her learning the symbols for numbers and counting with real materials to understand the number system and operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with Montessori materials and then gets into abstraction where the child works without the material. This way the child builds a strong foundation of every concept.

The child learns about his cosmos by learning botany, zoology, history, and geography. The child learns about plants that grow around the school and his home, various animals and the names of countries, continents and states. They learn about monuments, landforms, buildings, facts about temples and Indian culture.

The children in the pre primary (2.6 years to 6 years) stay in a mixed age group environment where they learn from each other, care for younger ones and live as a community.

In Samskaara, we give opportunities for children to make their own snacks in the child friendly kitchen and pantry area, which is part of their environment. They love baking and taking home their own creations. They experiment with cooking rice, making dosa, chapthi and other items of their choice. Our children love working in the garden where they grow vegetables and green salad leaves which they use to make their snacks.

Each child works independently with the materials they choose in the Montessori classroom environment. They also learn to work in groups. Sometimes when they observe others who are working and older children help and teach the younger ones . Busy as bees and as efficient as ants, the children steadily gain knowledge and wisdom while learning kindness, team-work, sharing and bonding with peers.

An A'maze'ing feat

It is a beautiful sight to see little handsand feet at work, but would you trust your child with a heavy tray? We do!
Last week, (July 10-14th) our CASA children practiced walking through a maze, carrying a bowl of water on a tray, with utmost focus… their eyes, hands and feet in perfect coordination.

Why? You ask… Inside the environment, all children choose material of their interest, on their own, be it glassware, earthenware or steel. We trust in our children and this builds in them a sense of responsibility and independence, the keys to success.
Cleanup, clean up, little stars Once the activity was done, we felt an immense sense of fulfillment when a Senior Montessori child volunteered and tidied up the maze floor with a mop while the other younger children observed her act of community caring.
Madam Maria Montessori’s vision of self-reliance was exhibited by these little Montessorians through these gestures. Joy is truly in the tiny details.

Elementary

Grades 1 to 5

Samskaara also offers a full fledged Elementary Montessori environment for grade 1 to 5 children. Scientific research and decades of observation tells us that children of this age group have an innate urge to their logical, reasoning and intellectual skills. They now look for not only answers to 'what is this', 'what is that' but they also wish to know 'how things work?' 'Why does something need to be done the way it is done?' and so on. This gives satisfaction and a feeling of self fulfillment to elementary children.

Samskaara provides plenty of opportunities for children to do detailed studies and research works. This stimulates them to take up responsibilities with necessary guidance  to do research works, projects and assignments from scratch to end result or till the required result is achieved.

This way we see our elementary Samskaarians experience the excitement of discovering and learning new things all by themselves. This inculcates a lot of confidence and ability to take up any challenge in their lives.

When we have to take a new route to a new place, no matter how much somebody explains, we feel confident and get a sense of direction only after we physically travel or experience the path. This is exactly how almost all concepts and life skills have been materialised into concrete form in Montessori environments. They assist the children to have hands-on experience, both at sensorial and scientific levels, needed for them to learn for academic purposes. Indirectly Montessori environments and materials prepare our children for a way of leading life in a contented and honest manner.

With consistent practice with the concrete materials, over a period of time, children master the techniques and also move towards abstraction independently with complete understanding.

60 Minutes with 16 Chefs

Elementary Kitchen, 27 June 2023, Tuesday – Pavithra Arulvel

Veggies were lined up – carrots and potatoes, onions and tomatoes, corn and peas – to be turned into a mouth-watering recipe.
Our chefs were dressed in custom-made aprons, armed with their culinary weapons! Their little hands were cleaning, peeling, chopping and grating -- filling the new elementary kitchen with rhythmic sounds.

"Whiiiiiissssssssss' went our pressure cooker, creating a sudden silence among the children. Butter melted over the buns; aromatic masalas blended into the steamed vegetables; and a lavish sprinkle of coriander leaves gave the final touch.
Did it stop there? Not at all! From creation to cleaning – children made sure to leave no spoon unturned in their efforts to restore the kitchen to its pristine state – as the Montessori mantra goes – ‘Everything in its place and a place for everything’.
Within seconds the delicious snack paved its way into everyone's tummy. And so with slurpsand burps, smiles and plates-wiped clean, the story of the Pav Bhaji ended in the Elementary cooking station.

Stories immortal
Everyone is a storyteller – Mother Nature is no exception.

Elementary Block, 21 June 2023, Wednesday – Sindhuja M

As Samskaarians returned to school after their summer vacation, the first week in the elementary block was filled with stories! Stories about travels, events, family time, visit to grandparents' home, and the Story of Creation.
We allow children to explore the world around them, but truly, there are things that can’t be reached like the stars, Moon, Sun, or our past.
The first great story imparts the scientific information of how the universe was created (oh yes... The Big Bang Theory) in a way that appeals to the imagination of children aged 5 to 12 years.
This story has a blend of mystery and truth, with dramatic language that fascinates children and brings alive their eagerness to know more about the things they have heard. It also encourages children to settle down in the environment, like every particle followed a certain law and settled down when the universe was created... as they are told in the story.
The story enhances knowledge and touches children emotionally - awakening their gratitude towards Mother Nature or ‘The Great Power’ as it is named in Montessori pedagogy.
We, humans are addicted to stories. And, great stories never die even though the storytellers do.

Do you tell stories to your children?

Middle & High School

Grades 6 to 10

Our older students are taught using a blend of the single subject system with an integrated approach where the teacher connects two or more  subjects with one theme or topic. This widens the scope of understanding and knowledge that every student gains.

Grades 6 to 8 following an integrated syllabus (ICSE Board pattern) and Grades 9 to 10 following the ICSE board syllabus.

Morning struggles and tears – sound familiar?

If you hear a toddler crying in the morning or standing with leaky nose and big, red swollen eyes, then more often than not, it indicates that it is a school day. The moment of separation from parents during the a.m. drop off, is the hardest job for a child in the entire day. Many bawl, some howl and a few roll on the floor. Some bid adieu with a heavy heart and teary eyes. But some walk away, waving goodbye to their parents with immense confidence and happiness, looking ahead to a wonderful day.

It is most often fear of the unknown - of the new environment and the new adults who are complete strangers… that emerge as tears and sad faces.

When children come to school for the very first time, they take a huge leap ahead, out of their familiar, comfortable home space.  And when a child is likely to spend, on an average, one lakh hours in school, it is imperative that their experience is memorable, enjoyable and with little or no complications, as they move forward each year in their school life.

In a Montessori school, the child is kept at the center and activities are tailor-made for her or him, depending on their unique nature.

The school is called Casa di Bambini (House of Children) - which is similar to their own home. Montessori’s philosophy of independence, freedom to choose, move, talk and work with their hands, helps the child to slowly acclimatize to the process of learning.

The facilitators offering them a subtle, loving presence, while providing space to do what they want. This allows them to accept the school and the adult slowly. Gradually increasing the school time from one hour to a full day, makes the child feel comfortable to work, share space, eat meals and spend time with friends and adults in the environment. Performing day-to-day activities like mopping, cleaning, cooking, cutting and painting helps them to become independent. It teaches them patience, partnership and creates a sense of belonging.

Personal reflections

Some days when we enter a classroom, we can hear one or two children crying, but still continuing to work. And sure enough, in a short while, they forget that they are crying because of the work they are engrossed in or by a little friend who consoles them. This is even more so in a Montessori setup, where the mixed age group brings older and younger children into the same environment. Older children take care of the younger ones like a little brother or sister! And younger ones watch and learn from their older ‘school siblings’. This feeling of oneness and community creates a home-like atmosphere at school.

Parents even tell us that children prefer school days to holidays and look forward to what new experiences await each day. What more could facilitators ask for?!

A Unique Form Of Education

Providing holistic education for a better future.

The Samskaara method is a unique form of education that enables the child to develop as a whole. The name Samskaara comes from the Sanskrit words ‘sam’ meaning totality and ‘akara’ referring to form or personality

A personalized approach for every student

We understand the importance of individual attention in a student's learning journey. That's why we maintain a teacher to student ratio of 1:10, ensuring that each student receives the guidance and support they need to thrive.

Learn from peers, grow together

Our classrooms consist of mixed age groups, fostering a collaborative learning environment where students learn not only from teachers but also from their peers. This dynamic interaction enhances their understanding and encourages personal growth.

Evidence-based assessments for continuous improvement

We believe in measuring progress through school-based assessments up to primary classes. This allows us to track each student's growth and provide personalized feedback for continuous improvement.
